How to Pick the Right Fisheye Lens: Thread Size, Optics, and What Actually Changes Your Shot

A fisheye lens is one of the few pieces of gear that actually changes how a clip feels, not just how sharp it looks. Get the wrong one and you either can't mount it, or you mount it and the corners fall apart. Here's how to actually pick one.
Quick answer
Check the front element of your camera or camcorder for a small Ø symbol followed by a number in millimeters, that's your filter thread size. Common sizes run 37mm to 72mm. Sizes 37-43mm are a compact optical design built for smaller camcorders; 52-72mm are a larger optical design with a bigger image circle and better edge performance on modern sensors. Non-standard threads (like 82mm or 49mm) adapt to these sizes with a step ring.
Step 1: Find your thread size
Every fisheye lens for a camcorder screws onto a filter thread, the ring around your existing lens, measured in millimeters. Look at the front lens element, the very front of your camera or camcorder's own lens. Manufacturers usually stamp the thread size right there, next to a small circle-with-a-line-through-it symbol, Ø, followed by a number. That number in millimeters is your thread size.
This isn't a Realm thing or an Opteka thing, it's a standard the whole camera industry uses, which is exactly why a fisheye from a completely different brand can screw onto your setup in the first place. Common camcorder threads run 37mm, 43mm, 52mm, 58mm, 62mm, 67mm and 72mm.
Step 2: Compact build, or larger optical design
Fisheye lenses in this range come in two physical families, and it's not just about which one fits, it's about which is built for your setup.
37mm and 43mm are a compact optical design: lighter, smaller, built around smaller camcorders where a bulkier lens doesn't make sense.
52mm through 72mm are a larger optical design. More glass generally means a bigger image circle, which tends to mean better edge performance and less vignetting, especially on newer digital cameras with larger sensors.
Neither is "the good one." It's about matching the physical design to what you're actually filming on.
Running a non-standard thread
Not every camera lines up with a common size, and that's normal, it's exactly what step rings are for.
82mm thread (Panasonic AG-HVX200) → 82-72mm step-down ring → our 72mm lens. Expect some vignetting from the extra ring, a known tradeoff on this setup, not a defect. The AG-HPX170, often grouped with the HVX200, actually runs a native 72mm thread, no ring needed, it screws straight onto our 72mm lens.
Cameras with a 49mm thread, like the Panasonic AG-AC90 or HC-VX981K, adapt the same way: a 49-52mm step-up ring into our 52mm lens.

Getting it sharp once it's adapted
Screw-on fisheye lenses are built around a specific distance between the glass and the sensor. Stack a step ring, or run one on a camera it wasn't originally matched to, and that distance shifts enough to soften the image, sometimes across the whole frame, not just the edges. It's a common issue because the camera's focus sensor sits too close to the add-on lens once it's adapted.
This shows up most often on a specific handful of Panasonic camcorders: the HC-X1500, HC-X2000, and AG-AC160 all need a bit of extra distance to hit focus once a fisheye is mounted. Their focus range simply sits further from the lens than other models. That's not a flaw in the camera or the lens, just how those bodies are built.
The fix is a macro filter (a diopter) stacked in front of the lens, pulling focus back in. A +10 combined with a +1 is a common combo. Sometimes a spacer ring gets you there instead. It depends on the exact camera, there's no single setting for every setup, tell us what you're running and we'll help you dial it in.
Want more vignette, on purpose?
Not everyone's trying to get rid of it. Some filmers stack two or three spacer rings on purpose to push the vignette further, all the way to a full circle, for that classic tunnel look. Same rings, opposite goal, worth knowing either way.
What actually matters once it's mounted
The fisheye look, the swirl, the way everything at the edges pulls into frame, is the whole point, not something to correct. What actually separates a good fisheye from a rough one is everything holding up around that: does it stay sharp enough at the edges that the frame doesn't fall apart, does it hold up filming into the sun or under lights without throwing flare across the shot, is it consistent from one unit to the next.

Do you make the glass yourselves?
Yes. We supply our own glass, ground and multi-coated to our spec, across every size. It's not repackaged from someone else's catalog.
Why is my fisheye lens coming out blurry?
Almost always a working-distance issue: the camera's focus sensor sits too close to the add-on lens once it's mounted or adapted. A macro filter (often a +10 and a +1 diopter together) or a spacer ring corrects it. Tell us your setup and we'll help you figure out what's needed.
Does my specific camera need a macro filter or spacer to focus?
Some do. The Panasonic HC-X1500, HC-X2000, and AG-AC160 are the ones we hear about most, along with the DVX200, which needs a +1 and +10 diopter specifically. Not every camera has this issue, plenty focus fine straight out of the box, so tell us your model and we'll tell you if you need anything extra.
Will a step-up or step-down ring vignette my shot?
Possibly, some darkening in the corners is a known tradeoff on certain adapter combinations, the 82mm-to-72mm setup on an HVX200 being a common example. Some filmers stack extra spacer rings on purpose for exactly that look.
